Incident: Reported attack on USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy by North Vietnamese forces, Tonkin Gulf Vietnam, August 4 1964
Casualties: Zero dead, zero injured. Ships unharmed.
Official explanation: North Vietnamese attack that simply missed time and again for hours.
Outcome: The alleged attack led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution is Congress, and escalation of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam conflict. Some may have actually believed it, but by now at least few do.
